Firewood FAQs — The Firewood Department
Frequently Asked Questions
About Our Wood
Where does your wood come from?
Most of our hardwoods come from the retirement of mature fruit and nut trees. Orchards and farms in the region retire trees at the end of their productive lives — these become premium firewood. This is a renewable source that benefits local agriculture and delivers a superior burn compared to green or lower-quality wood.
What species do you carry?
We stock:
- Specialty Hardwoods: Almond, Cherry, Apricot, Plum, Eucalyptus, Mixed Hardwood
- Softwoods: Pine and other softwoods
- Oak: Red Oak / Live Oak
Which firewood burns the hottest?
Hardwoods (Almond, Cherry, Oak) produce more BTUs per cord than softwoods. They burn longer, produce less smoke, and leave less creosote in your chimney. Pine and other softwoods are excellent for kindling or starting fires but burn faster.
Is your firewood seasoned?
Yes. All of our firewood is seasoned (dried) before delivery. Properly seasoned wood has a moisture content below 20%, which means it lights easily, burns efficiently, and produces less smoke and creosote.
What is the moisture content of your wood?
Properly seasoned firewood should be below 20% moisture. Our wood is dried before sale. If you have a moisture meter, we encourage you to test it — we stand behind the quality of our product.
Cord Sizes & Pricing
What is a full cord of firewood?
A standard cord is a stack measuring 4 ft × 4 ft × 8 ft (128 cubic feet of wood, bark, and airspace). It’s the standard unit of measurement for firewood in North America.
What is a face cord or rick?
A face cord (also called a rick) is typically one-third of a full cord — 4 ft × 8 ft × 16 inches. We sell by the full cord, ½ cord, ¼ cord, and 40 lb bag for specialty hardwoods. See our Products page for current pricing.
What fits in a standard truck bed?
A short-bed pickup can hold about ½ cord. A long-bed pickup can hold up to ¾ cord. If you’re picking up, let us know the truck size and we’ll help you plan.
